And all of them know and can do lots of things.
We bring together the people that make a classroom a community. That could be teachers, students, family members, local business owners, people from faith communities, and anyone who wants to contribute. Next we participate in a brainstorming session to surface and activate the things we know and can do. Then we combine those things with classroom content to make new and creative lessons that are organically grown and locally sourced!
A parent from the classroom is an amateur photographer. Not an expert, not a professional, but with an affinity for photography. They sit with an owner of the local coffee shop and generate an idea that meets the second-grade standard for social studies in Oregon that says, "Describe and analyze the many ways students can affect their local community." They come up with a class called Through our Lens: how we affect community. The teacher and parent then lead a unit where students take pictures of themselves and each other coming up with ways to have a positive local impact. The pictures are developed, framed, and put on display in the local coffee shop.

Here is who we are already working with (and the list is growing!!)

"I did feel a little pressure during the first round but each round afterwards got easier and easier and personally, my ideas and creativity really evolved from beginning to end. As someone who is not creative and if I have to it takes a little bit to build the momentum, the structure of the Creativity Labs worked really well for me. It’s exciting to think about hosting future labs and inviting more youth into our space along with a new make up of agency staff and community partners."
